Is Pennsylvania Automatically 50/50?
Do not assume "shared custody" means an automatic equal split of overnights. Pennsylvania law recognizes different forms of physical custody, and courts deciding disputed custody apply the statutory best-interest factors in 23 Pa.C.S. § 5328. The section lists 16 numbered factors, including safety, parental duties, stability, sibling relationships, proximity of residences and other circumstances relevant to the child's best interest — with "substantial weighted consideration" given to the factors bearing on the child's safety over the others. No single factor controls on its own.
A 50/50 arrangement can work for some families, but equal nights alone do not resolve school transportation, activities, holidays or exchanges. The legal best-interest analysis is broader than any planning checklist — for an actual dispute, consult the statute and qualified counsel.
Pennsylvania's 40% Overnight Threshold Can Affect Child Support
Pennsylvania's support rules contain a specific shared-custody adjustment. Under Pa.R.C.P. 1910.16-4(c), when the obligor has the children for 40% or more of annual overnights — roughly 146 nights in a 365-day year — a rebuttable presumption arises that the basic support obligation should be reduced to reflect that custodial time.
The rule's adjustment starts at 10% at 40% parenting time and increases incrementally to 20% at 50% parenting time under the guideline formula. That does not mean crossing 40% automatically decides custody or produces one guaranteed support number; income, expenses, deviations and case-specific facts still matter.

How to Test a Proposed Schedule
Two plans may both produce roughly 50/50 overnights — one may require six weekly handoffs, another may use school exchanges and fixed weekdays.
