Why Holiday Visitation Is Not The Same As A Holiday Custody Schedule
Holiday custody architecture assumes both parents already hold regular overnight blocks on a 50/50 or 60/40 rotation. Holiday visitation answers a different question: how does a parent who sees the child two weekends a month get Thanksgiving or winter break without losing December entirely?

The Real Problem: Holidays Can Stretch The Gap Between Visits
On every-other-weekend, Parent B may see the child Friday 6:00 p.m. through Sunday 6:00 p.m. twice a month — with twelve school days between handoffs. One holiday assigned to Parent A can push the next visit three weeks away.

What Meaningful Holiday Visitation Usually Needs In Writing

When Holiday Visitation Should Replace A Regular Weekend

How much holiday time does a noncustodial parent usually get?
Plans vary by court and distance. Common patterns: alternate major holidays by year, assign one half of winter break, or grant a fixed block — Wednesday after school through Sunday 6:00 p.m. on Thanksgiving. Write exact times; labels alone are not enforceable.
What if a holiday falls on my every-other-weekend?
Read whether the holiday substitutes for or adds to your weekend. If Parent A's Thanksgiving block covers your Fri–Sun, you need a make-up weekend clause or the visit is lost for November.
How do holidays work on an 80/20 schedule?
Parent with 20% time often receives alternate-year major holidays or a winter-break segment because ordinary weekends are sparse. Count December overnights on paper — one EOW weekend may not satisfy "holiday access."
When is a make-up weekend required?
When a holiday block assigned to the other parent consumes your regular Fri–Sun visit and the plan says holiday time is in addition to — not instead of — base visitation. Name the make-up weekend deadline: within 14 days or first open weekend in January.
How does travel distance change holiday visitation?
Long-distance parents need longer blocks and earlier notice — 30 to 45 days for winter break. A four-hour drive for a six-hour visit may need a written minimum overnight count or video-call substitute.
What if I missed regular visitation because of a holiday overlap?
Invoke the make-up clause in writing with proposed dates. Without a clause, negotiate an extra Friday night or document the loss for a future modification — do not assume informal swaps stick.
Can holiday visitation be dinner only without an overnight?
Yes — if the plan says so. Birthday dinner 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. is valid access when Wednesday is not an overnight night. Ambiguity produces "you had the afternoon" arguments.
Is this the same as a holiday custody override schedule?
No. Override schedules govern equal-time base rotations. This page governs access for parents whose regular calendar already gives limited Fri–Sun or monthly visits.
